There are two things crucial for well-balanced nutrients and good substrates: the EC-value and the pH-value.
Plants have certain demands on irrigation water. The quality of irrigation wter is important for continuous growth. Wter hardness is important, too.
If water contains many calcium- and magnesium-ions, we call it "hard" water. Hard water, though, is harmful for plant, which like to have acidic substrates.

The EC-value of the water is determined by it's conductivity. If the salt content in the water is high, the EC-value is high, as well. The concentration of salt in the plant always has to be higher than the one of it's environment,
because the water drifts from low salt concentration to high salt concentration - that so towards the plant.
The acidic level of the water is expressed as pH-value. It shows the concentration of ions in the water. The lower the pH-value, the less acid is in the water. With a pH-value of 7, the water (or the soil) is neutral. Lower than 7, the water is acidic, higher than 7, the water is alkaline (basic).
Most poted plants are happy with a pH-value of 5.5 to 6.
It is even more importat that the pH-value is stable and doesn't fluctuate. Changing pH-values cause deviations in the nutrient absobtion of the plant.
