Active carbon filters are repositories filled with active carbon. They are mostly used to clean air or water from organic harmful substances like gasoline, solvent or pesticides. Therefore the air or the water is led through the repository over the active carbon. The organic harmful substances will stick on the active carbon, sort of speak, the will get absorbed. At the exit of the filter fresh air respectively or water comes out.

Activated carbon contains ca. 90% strongly blown carbon. Showing a structure like the one of a sponge, the activated carbon has an extremely large surface. The inner surface, that means the surface of the air bubbles inside the carbon, is up to 2000 sqaure meters per gram large. 5 gram of carbone have more surface than a football-pitch.
